If you are transitioning into a fully plant-based diet, congratulations! There are so many health benefits in doing so.
You’ll notice that a lot of dairy products like cheese and milk are replaced with options that are made out of nuts such as Nut-based milks, cultured butter, sweets and cheeses.
If you have noticed an occurrence of more cold sores or genital herpes outbreaks since making this switch, it’s because nuts, chocolate, pre-workouts, and seeds contain high amounts of L-Arginine This amino acid needs to be in balance with L-lysine.
L-Arginine is a vasodilating amino acid that acts like gasoline that fuels all herpes viruses, whereas L-lysine is likened to birth control for the virus.

There are 6 types of herpes viruses and chances are you got at least one of them!
Herpes 1 is cold sores, Herpes 2 is genital sores, Herpes 3 is shingles/chicken pox, Herpes 4 is Epstein Barr, Herpes 5 is Cytomegalovirus, and Herpesvirus 6 is just named that.
If you find yourself in that situation, the best thing to do is take 1g of L-Lysine daily to prevent an outbreak.
If you are in an active outbreak you should take 1g of L-Lysine 3x/day. You may also benefit from taking Lemon Balm liquid, or you can use it in capsule form Lemon Balm Force (2 capsules 3x/day) studies show 600 mg daily can inhibit the herpes virus.
Other Considerations:
Lysine is needed with B6 to create L-Carnitine. If you don’t have the co-factors to create Carnitine or you don’t eat enough protein you will have trouble burning fat.
Carnitine is needed for fatty acid metabolism. Deficiencies in this can result in hypoglycemia as well.
It wouldn’t be a bad idea to supplement with that if you’re switching to a plant-based diet or if you have a tendency towards low blood sugar.
Other Things You Can Do:
The Journal of Phytomedicine found sandalwood essential oil to significantly inhibit herpes simplex 1 and 2 replication. Journal of Phytomedicine also found Peppermint oil to be 99% effective against an acyclovir-resistant strain of Herpes simplex 1!
