Hey everyone! I’ve been a little MIA with blogging, I’ve been taking an intensive immunology class — and boy is it fascinating!
This week, our immunology professor has us researching all different strains of bacteria and their effect on the chemical messengers (called cytokines) and exactly what areas of the immune system they influence.
And of course, what DISEASES each strain helps to heal.

I came across this novel study from 2017 that observed 44 patients with HIV, 22 of whom did not respond to antiviral therapy despite long-term suppressed viral load.
The aim of the study was to see what effect this strain ‘Saccharomyces Boulardii’ had on their immunity.
Imbalance in the gut microbiome can lead to bacterial translocation and chronic inflammation in pretty much everyone (but especially detrimental in those with HIV — even if they are on Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy). Non-responders account for 30% of all HIV/AIDS cases.
HAART-treated individuals have been reported to show a continual inverse correlation between levels of bacterial translocation and inability to build up CD4+T cells.
For 12 weeks these patients received S. boulardii or placebo.
The group that received the S. boulardii had significantly reduced levels of systemic inflammation (cytokine IL-6) & significantly reduced levels of Lipopolysaccharides (bacteria found in leaky gut-very very bad), reduced bacterial translocation (which means better able to rebuild CD4+T cells).
The multiple anti-inflammatory mechanisms produced by S. boulardii provide molecular explanations to support its effectiveness in intestinal inflammatory state.
This study concluded: that the use of specific probiotics (S. boulardii) could be a new therapeutic strategy for HIV patients.
